To mark the centenary year for the Noble Park Public Hall Trust the trustees installed an Honour Board in the Noble Park Public Hall at the Paddy O’Donoghue Centre, Buckley Street, Noble Park.
The board displays the names of all trustees since the first trust meeting in 1913 when Mr C Luxford, Mr P J Maroney, and Mr J Bunn were appointed. Around 1922 when the brick hall was built the trustees were Mr C Isaac, Mr A Smith, Mr C Beatty, Mr W Simpson and Mr D Luxford. The Trust deed allows for five trustees, all of whom must be land owners, living in the Noble Park area.
Trustees are appointed for a term of 5 years, and are able to re-nominate for further 5 year periods. Since 1920 22 people have been elected to the esteemed role of hall trustee, and as well, in accordance with changes to the trust deed in 2005, a sixth trustee is appointed annually, to represent the City of Greater Dandenong.
Most trustees have had a long association with the public hall, including the more recent trustees, Olive O’Donoghue has served for 33 years, Dawn Dickson for 32 years, Adrian Barnard for 24 years, Neville Tate for 25 years and Alan Gordon for 17 years. The present 6th trustee, Ms Lynette While has held her position on the trust for 2 years (as at 2015).
At the Annual General Meeting in June 2013 Ms Gaye Guest was elected to the trust to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Mrs O’Donoghue.
Amongst their historical memorabilia the trustees now have the original trust Minute Book, recording meetings held around 1919. The 94 year old book is in almost perfect condition.
An interesting motion on the books dated February 10th 1919 shows an entry where free hire was given for a concert to raise funds for the Tubercular Sailors and Soldiers Sanatorium. Back in those days the trustees struggled to raise enough funds to run the hall and at most meetings, the trustees agreed to ‘hold over’ an account or two, to the following meeting, for payment.
Hall hiring fees in 1919 were two shillings and sixpence for dances and concerts, and one shilling for nightly meetings.
In 1922 the decision was made to build a new hall, and later that year to raise funds they held a “Cinderella” night, charging the ladies one shilling entry, and the gentlemen paid two shillings. The records also show that in December 1923 a school concert was held at the hall and the trustees believe that the photo that has been displayed on the history boards with lots of children in the hall, would have been that 1923 school concert.
Adrian Barnard, the Chairman of the Noble Park Public Hall Trust said that “the Honour Board gives due recognition to those who have volunteered their time as a trustee, and those names are now preserved in history”.
